This Horse was not like the ones on a carousel. Those horses can never leave their poles. They go around and around in circles. They look impressive. They are beautiful. But they can never travel. They only have circular adventures.

The Horse was given to a one-year old boy who was very scared of the Horse.

The Boy’s parents would place the Horse anywhere in their house they didn’t want the boy to go near. This meant a certain glass cabinet full of shiny and coloured things, rarely had grubby finger marks on it.

The Boy got older and conquered his fear and he began to ride the Horse. The crystal cabinet became festooned with smudges and smears.

The Boy loved the Horse, but not like in Equus. He could never hurt the Horse.

The Boy saved the Horse from being taken to the tip on the back of a trailer. No one saved Boxer from the back of the van, did they?

The Horse follows the Boy from home to home. These days he waits for the Boy to come back from the Place of Important Work, looking out for the Boy from his vantage point. The Horse sees the goings on of Porter Street South. South, not north.

The Boy still loves him, but he is too big to ride the Horse.

The Horse is now 44 and it appears plastic doesn’t last forever. The Horse’s wheels have become brittle and a few have broken. Tiny fractures are appearing on the Horse and the song “Fade to Grey” pops often into the Boy’s head.

The Boy gets sad at the ephemeral nature of plastic and how it leaves the world. He then gets sadder when he thinks of the people that have left. He knows the Horse too, will one day leave.

In the company of the Horse, the Boy reminisces about the 44 years and smiles at how much love, laughter, joy, dancing, singing, adventures, flavours, sunshine, lights, music and colour, there have been.

The Fire Horse Boy is grateful. The plastic may leave, but the memories won’t and will continue to be felt. He hopes.

Once upon a time there was a Wooden Dragon.

The Dragon watched over the people at the Candy Bar.

Many people have stories and memories of the Candy Bar.

The Boy with the Horse has stories of the Candy Bar and still mourns its demise. He knows people in far away lands who were saddened to hear the bar was no longer.

One day, the Boy walked passed a skip and saw the Dragon’s head staring back at him. He looked further and saw the Dragon’s body. He rescued the Dragon from the tip and took the Dragon home.

The Dragon is still in pieces. The Boy is really crap at woodwork and needs to locate an artisan to make the Dragon whole and reverse the crumbling of the wood. Wood is more ephemeral than plastic. In time, the wood might become fossilised and stone-like. The Boy wonders that if the Horse and the Dragon were made of stone, then maybe they would be here for even longer than they will be.

“One day I’ll find an Artisan”, the Boy thinks. He thinks about the other things he’ll do one day. He then gets sad about the people who passed before their “one days”.

The Dragon now watches over the people who visit the West Balcony of the South. Like the Candy Bar, this balcony has been a site of recovery and connection.

The Dragon and the Horse. They are brothers with blue eyes. They are watchful, and their presence reassures. They have stories and they bring about the remembering of memories.

Nothing lasts forever so the Boy remembers to enjoy the moments that he is watched over by the Horse and the Dragon. He remembers to Enjoy. Enjoy what you do.

Things are disposable. We throw away a lot. What memories do we bury even deeper when we cull.

Some say not to attach. The Boy knows he could walk away from the Horse and the Dragon and never see them again. However the Boy is concerned he will lose his memories, or that they will sink deeper and deeper and become not so memorable.

The Horse and the Dragon watch the Boy now. As his ears are filled by the Kam Shafaati podcast, the boy imagines running with the Horse and flying with the Dragon. They are having adventures.

He’s remembering. He’s creating. He’s grateful. He’s very happy.

The default is to smile.

[Aside:

The Boy doesn’t believe he has been scarred by his parent’s actions when he was scared of the Horse. Maybe fears overcome are forgotten or sink too deep to remember. He’s thinking his parents did a good job helping him with the earlier stages of growing into this world.

When you tell me to stand behind the yellow line I just feel like boot scootin’ along it… Maybe the Macarena? #traintweets

On this occasion I didn’t boot scoot… I’m not sure I know how to anyway… if I had busted a move it wouldn’t have looked particularly “yee-haa” probably because I was listening to a doof doofed re-working of the theme from Baywatch by Sunblock, called “I’ll Be Ready” (see end bits).

These days when you catch a train you get heaps of announcements. I’m trying to remember when this started… was it when Metro took over? It seems to me to reek a little of “Let’s make some noise so that it sounds like we’re busy” I mean people, how many times do we need to be told what the yellow line is there for and what to do about it? [I think it could be a cover because that’s what year 8’s do all the time when they’re poorly faking doing their work.]

I’m sure I already knew what to do about the yellow line… I mean it’s not like the yellow brick road now is it? You don’t follow it now do you? [I must say at this point that one time waiting for a very late night train into city at Prahran, I walked up and down the yellow line as I had the urge. I think I was listening to a marching song.]

Why do I need to be reminded several times a day what to do with the yellow line?

There are other announcements too. I’m not suggesting their content is useless but to hear them again and again kind of makes me feel like Metro think we commuters are stupid and don’t get it. Occasionally when I see people pushing onto the carriage before others can get off I think: “Maybe many commuters are stupid.”

I’m glad that the Myki lady has been quiet of late. Her announcements about touching unsettled me. I think she’s a little too sensual in the way she speaks. Some tannoys should be more inhuman and some should be more human. A tannoy voice speaking about ‘touching on and off’ should I think, be neutral.

I think I get annoyed about being told what to do about the yellow line because a) I know what to do, b) I want to stand on the wrong side of the yellow line and touch the train or at least feel the rush and pull faces at the occupants and c) I’m a closet line crosser.

Conclusion: How about the energy being put into announcing things, be put into getting the trains running and on time and more frequently? How about there be some trains running all night, especially on a weekend?

Note1: I am not advocating others should behave in a risky and unsafe manner around trains. I just think it’s my choice what to about my behaviour. I would like to add that if it appears there are people who can’t think for themselves around me, who are likely to follow my example, I always behave respectfully, lawfully and safely. At least I hope I do. I don’t know what I look like when I do the things I do so it’s a bit hard to tell.

Note2: My boss has a line. He won’t tell me when I’m nearing it. Which I don’t like. I like to know where the line is. I’d hate to cross a line and not know. If I did cross a line and not know, I might not experience the full effect of all of the outcomes of crossing the line.

Conclusion: 1) Doughnuts are evil, 2) G needs to sit by the river next time he wants a little time outside… Well away from the convenience store that sells convenient, yet very bad things. [Thank goodness it wasn’t dollar day...]

Still without corrective lenses… Consequence #8: “I’m Free” by the Soup Dragons is stuck in my head… and a smile bigger than the ones induced by a New Yorker living in Sydney, is on my dial. Singing: “Don’t be afraid of your freedom.”

Attention to detail is not possible without being squinty and that’s not a good look…

So I’m not giving any attention to detail… just focussing on light, colour, movement and sound… Yes, the world is disco and round like a record baby, after all…

Not being able to see properly makes me feel anonymous… It’s like I’m overseas and a stranger in town. I’m free to be.

Consequence #11: I have experienced this many times before… and once again I think I may be strutting when I walk… Except it’s not the Bee Gees… It’s Soup Dragons… Yes, the music has my butt once more… I should be dancing…

Running into anyone you know is highly unlikely, when you’re travelling… or when you can’t see properly.

Strangers can do anything… I love the freedom of anonymity.

I responded but was short of time to fully discuss and expand my ideas. This is how far I got…

I’ll start by looking at the words ‘mornings’ and ‘evenings’.

Both contain the letter G.

This is excellent for both times of the day because some of the most fun things start with G (I will not elaborate at this point because that would mean I’m off topic).

However ‘eveninGs’ contain a V and that letter rocks out!

You can make a V with your finGers, there’s V drinks that keep you dancing all night, there’s V from True Blood, there’s that tV show called V. V is for Virgin Active, a place I loVe. V is in loVe.

If you draw a line across the top of a V you get a trianGle and trianGles are always complicated and interesting – especially right angle trianGles – most fonts would feature V without a right anGle however… but such a V would be recoGnisable as a V.

Anyway as I wouldn’t banG on about G’s I will stop now about V.

I must Get back to work soon but I think eVeninGs are more fun because I don’t have to concentrate as much as in the morninGs.

Reflections: if someone had arrived at platform one with more special needs than I have, I would have moved. However this morning I felt extra special and I wasn’t about to stand in front of an empty bench seat without taking up the offer of a seat.

I might add that unlike Preferred Seating when buying tickets, there was nothing special about the location of the seat. There was also nothing special about the experience of sitting on it as the seat was made of rather hard and cold metal.

The sitting in the sunshine bit was very special however.

Sometimes it’s really good to make yourself special.

Now the last time I checked, points were pretty damn pointy and could hurt. I’m not sure we should be rushing towards the pain… or should we? Status update @ ~11.32 am July 1, 2009:

“Hey GF you know those squashy stress ball thingies that are not always a ball? *GF: “Yes, I do know them.” Well, what if they were human sized and you could wear them and instead of you squeezing them, they squeezed you? *GF: “Awesome! I want one now!” Hold your horses, Veruca! *GF: “OK, OK. You know they would need to be water proof as I imagine such a device could be dribble inducing…”

What if the above device also pinched me when I needed it?

Not like when I’m on the dance floor without my specs… [I may have alluded to this before in another post…] In this case you need to pinch my butt to get my attention. [This could be a bit tricky these days as my butt appears to be disappearing with all this running… think after the city2surf I will be stack the weights on in the squat and lunge tracks and eat special gluteal enhancing food…] I find eye contact in the dark, especially when lights and music are involved, not that possible [even though there are lights making it less dark, the lights flash and strobe a lot and they get my attention… faces at these times don’t get my attention and I have elsewhere stated I am a face person…]

Oh look… I have taken the longer way around to stating: On dance floors when you want GF’s attention, pinch his arse. He can’t see well in the dark without glasses and eye contact is only possible when he’s 3 feet away.

Back to the pinching and squeezing device that you can wear…

Such a device would help me sleep and relax and I reckon it would be far more fun than just dosing up on more coffee to get through the day. Is caffeine today’s cheap, very accessible Soma? [See END BITS for more on Soma or read “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley – see my post in June called: "Give me Soma, not a finger wave! Triple shots and high voltage rock ‘n’ roll…consequences coming…"]

Such a device would clear my mind I’m sure, and allow me to function better in daylight. I would be so ‘on it’ that it is unlikely others would be able to press my buttons without me seeing their fingers and toes coming… I also doubt they could poke me with stuff without me realising. [LFD, my ears aren’t as ticklish as they used to be, so don’t even think about it].

Such a device could come in many different fashion colours like an iPod nano or a Smart Car. You could have special edition devices like a new M&M or Smartie colour.

Such a device would probably cost a lot and I do need a new suit for work and some skins for running… so I guess coffee would be the less expensive, even though liver challenging option.

Such a device would probably be as addictive as caffeine but I reckon that I wouldn’t get the headaches like I do with caffeine lack. Are the consequences here? Will I need to fess up to my Traditional Chinese Medicine man? Will he stick the needles in harder if I do?

I think I will just need to accept that like for many other mammals, Winter is a time of hibernating or slowing down and getting cozy. [Is Vipassana in the snow what I need? It would have to be in the next couple of weeks or after “Show us your Teacups or Hands up in the Air!” and after the city2surf in August]

Yeah it’s probably time to dim the lights, fluff up the pillows, put on some chillout if there must be sound, read a chapter or two of something calming and drink herbal teas while sniffing a soothing mix on the oil burner…

Maybe then I would learn the full value of rest…

Veruca Salt

My brother and I used to call my niece Veruca sometimes when she was little. Then the Johnny Depp movie came out and we got in trouble when she worked out why we might have called her that. I hope we haven’t damaged her.

J you’re beautiful and I love you to bits. You can be my Veruca any day. Seriously, it was just a phase… we all have them… I’m having mine next week…

Also the Gene Wilder movie in 1971, was one of the first movies I ever saw. I saw it the cinema in Mahoneys Road, Forest Hill. There’s a gym or something there now… Anyway Mum left me in the cinema on my own to see this movie while she did the shopping. She asked the lady in the same row to keep and eye on me, telling her I wouldn’t go anywhere. My Mum knew her boys and I remember thinking “I wonder where Mum thinks I would go and why would I go somewhere else anyway? I’m here to see the movie!” I guess we behave like the world is a lot more dangerous these days… My Mum would get into a lot of trouble today… My Mum threatened to cut the plug off the TV several times. We knew she’d do it so on those occasions we didn’t mess with her. A TV you couldn’t plug in would have been more painful than the wooden spoon and the pain would have been chronic, not acute. [For a long time we were only allowed to watch Channel 2]

I love the 1971 Veruca. She would be a pain to hang with but I reckon she would stir things up a lot and annoy people for you.

Veruca Salt is a fictional character from the Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the subsequent film adaptations.

Veruca in the novel

Veruca, the only daughter of the wealthy Henry and Angina Salt, regularly exerts petulant behavior in order to get what she desires, and even her parents are not immune to her outbursts. When Veruca demands that she must have a Golden Ticket, her father buys numerous cases of Wonka Bars, and orders his factory workers to put aside their regular duties of peanut-shelling and unwrap the bars. The process lasts three days, all of which Veruca spends complaining that she doesn’t have her ticket. When the ticket is finally found, Veruca is “all smiles again.” Her father later confesses to Wonka that he knows his daughter is “a bit of a frump,” yet says that it’s no reason for his daughter to be “burned to a crisp,” on the grounds that he and his wife love their daughter very much.

In the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Veruca hails from England (her nationality was never specified in the novel), and her parents are renamed Henry and Henrietta. She complains about her father’s staff’s inability to find the Golden Ticket “the very first day”, and forgoes school until the ticket is found. He pleads with her to give him time, saying that his staff has been working from dawn until dusk for five days straight. Veruca bellows in response, “Make ’em work nights!” In order to expedite the process, Mr. Salt offers a £1 bonus to the first employee who finds the ticket.

Veruca wants to be the first to enter while waiting with the tour group outside Wonka’s factory, during which she is wearing one of her personal collection of four mink coats. She is obnoxious and aggressive, as depicted in the novel, in addition to resorting to threats and even physical violence. She shoves, pushes, and hits her father, and does likewise to Violet Beauregarde while both girls are descending the Chocolate Room stairs. This incident aside, she is not completely indifferent, though not entirely amiable, to the other children; she confides to Charlie, “He [Wonka] is absolutely bonkers!” and expresses concern over Violet and Augustus Gloop’s separate punishments for disobeying Wonka’s orders during the tour.

Veruca’s final scene is the Golden Egg Room, where she pleads to her father to buy her one of Wonka’s golden egg-laying geese. After Wonka naturally refuses the offer, Veruca goes on a tirade by trashing the room and disturbing the Oompa Loompas’ work. She then climbs onto an Eggdicator and is promptly dropped down into the trash incinerator after being rejected as a “bad egg.”

Julie Dawn Cole portrayed Veruca in the film. The song “I Want it Now” was recorded on Cole’s thirteenth birthday, and Veruca’s trashing of the Golden Egg Room required a total of thirty-six takes.

Veruca’s Endgame

In the novel, Veruca’s comeuppance takes place in Wonka’s Nut Sorting Room, which is occupied by worker squirrels. After being denied a squirrel by both Wonka and her mother, Veruca brazenly enters the premises and attempts to take a squirrel anyway. She is immediately engulfed by the creatures, pinned to the floor, rejected as a “bad nut,” and hauled into the garbage chute. Both her parents quickly suffer the same fate afterwards.

In the 1971 movie, the squirrels are replaced with geese laying golden eggs. Wonka denies a sale of one of the birds to Veruca, after which she sings her musical solo, “I Want It Now.” After then making a mess of the room, she stands atop the eggdicator, which judges her a “bad egg,” and sends her plummeting down the garbage chute en route to the furnace. Mr. Salt jumps down into the chute a moment later to try to rescue her. Their ultimate fate is only mentioned at the end of the movie, when Wonka assures Charlie that the four bad children will be returned to their normal, terrible selves, but maybe a bit wiser for the wear.

Hibernation

Hibernation is a state of inactivity and metabolic depression in animals, characterized by lower body temperature, slower breathing, and lower metabolic rate. Hibernating animals conserve energy, especially during winter when food is short, tapping energy reserves, body fat, at a slow rate. It is the animal’s slowed metabolic rate which leads to a reduction in body temperature and not the other way around.^{[citation needed]}

Hibernation may last several days or weeks depending on species, ambient temperature, and time of year. The typical winter season for a hibernator is characterized by periods of hibernation interrupted by sporadic euthermic arousals wherein body temperature is restored to typical levels. It has been shown that at least the arctic ground squirrel builds a need for sleep during hibernation, more slowly than normally, and must occasionally warm up in order to sleep.[1]

I will do this one day. No I mean it. Yes I know there are many people that would say that I couldn’t shut up for 10 days. I think the  not speaking would be easier than sitting still for hours at a time and getting up at 4.00am everyday.

The Technique

Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India’s most ancient techniques of meditation. It was rediscovered by Gotama Buddha more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills, i.e., an Art Of Living.

This non-sectarian technique aims for the total eradication of mental impurities and the resultant highest happiness of full liberation. Healing, not merely the curing of diseases, but the essential healing of human suffering, is its purpose.

Vipassana is a way of self-transformation through self-observation. It focuses on the deep interconnection between mind and body, which can be experienced directly by disciplined attention to the physical sensations that form the life of the body, and that continuously interconnect and condition the life of the mind. It is this observation-based, self-exploratory journey to the common root of mind and body that dissolves mental impurity, resulting in a balanced mind full of love and compassion.

The scientific laws that operate one’s thoughts, feelings, judgements and sensations become clear. Through direct experience, the nature of how one grows or regresses, how one produces suffering or frees oneself from suffering is understood. Life becomes characterized by increased awareness, non-delusion, self-control and peace.

SOMA

Soma (Sanskrit: सोम), or Haoma (Avestan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sauma-, was a ritual drink of importance among the early Indo-Iranians, and the later Vedic and greater Persian cultures. It is frequently mentioned in the Rigveda, whose Soma Mandala contains many hymns praising its energizing qualities. In the Avesta, Haoma has an entire Yasht dedicated to it.

It is described as prepared by extracting juice from the stalks of a certain plant. In both Vedic and Zoroastrian tradition, the drink is identified with the plant, and also personified as a divinity, the three forming a religious or mythological unity.

The identity of the original plant was most likely ephedra,^[1] although there are alternative suggestions, such as Amanita muscaria^[2], Psilocybin mushrooms^[3], Blue lotus^[4], Cannabis (Bhang),^[5][6] or even honey.^[7]

In Western Literature…

In Western literature, soma often refers to some form of intoxicating drug; it is also the brand name of the prescription muscle relaxant Carisoprodol.

In Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel Brave New World, soma is a popular dream-inducing drug. It provides an easy escape from the hassles of daily life and is employed by the government as a method of control through pleasure. It is ubiquitous and ordinary among the culture of the novel and everyone is shown to use it at some point, in various situations: sex, relaxation, concentration, confidence. It is seemingly a single-chemical combination of many of today’s drugs’ effects, giving its users the full hedonistic spectrum depending on dosage.

Soma is the central theme of the poem The Brewing of Soma by the American Quaker poet, John Whittier (1807-1892) from which the well-known Christian hymn “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” is derived. Whittier here portrays the drinking of soma as distracting the mind from the proper worship of God.

In the books Junkie and Naked Lunch, author William S. Burroughs refers to soma as a non-addictive, high-quality form of opium said to exist in ancient India.

Endorphins are endogenous opioid polypeptide compounds. They are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in vertebrates during strenuous exercise,[1] excitement, pain, death, and orgasm,[2][3] and they resemble the opiates in their abilities to produce analgesia and a sense of well-being. Endorphins work as “natural pain relievers”, whose effects may be enhanced by other medications.

The term “endorphin” implies a pharmacological activity (analogous to the activity of the corticosteroid category of biochemicals) as opposed to a specific chemical formulation. It consists of two parts: endo- and -orphin; these are short forms of the words endogenous and morphine, intended to mean “a morphine-like substance originating from within the body.”[4]

The term endorphin rush has been adopted in popular speech to refer to feelings of exhilaration brought on by pain, danger, or other forms of stress,[1] supposedly due to the influence of endorphins. When a nerve impulse reaches the spinal cord, endorphins are released which prevent nerve cells from releasing more pain signals. Immediately after injury, endorphins allow humans to feel a sense of power and control over themselves that allows them to persist with activity for an extended time.

Today is just right…

Today I has been good. What is good? Definitly a relative concept. Compared to other Saturdays I have behaved. I have spent money on nutrients that work. I have rested. I tidied up a bit. [Yes, only a bit... I am usually busy... a bit is a big deal... who am I kidding?]

I have conversed on the phone with lovely people. I ran into a treasured old friend who is still very young and going on the next adventure. “Bon Voyage D!” I’m saying that like Bugs Bunny would say it too, Mister. [Bon Voyagee!] Oh and D you’re right. I reckon if you hang outside the market [the one that sells coffee and raspberry bullets] in Commercial Road long enough you will meet everyone. [The Big Issue lady had gone... I did sleep in! Blonde on the Rocks made me very sleepy indeed... you are excellent dancing partners ladies!]

It’s been the day I needed…

[I'm trying not to make things right or wrong... that's supposed to be a good way to be... quite frankly I don't think I can help make things good or bad... I can however, cope with the fact that what was good one minute can become bad the next. I also think that we judge everything and that maybe the trick is not to attach too much if anything, to the judgements... I'll stop now. I am sounding like a book... a good book with very useful things to think about... go to bed... you're running tomorrow morning...]
